Tina’s Torment first saw the light of day many years ago - the second full story I’d ever written (back in the nineties), with the working title Dubious Revenge. It had a brief foray into the public eye between 2014 and 2017 as part of a collection called Triple Jeopardy, released under my alter-ego Rowanna Green.
If Tina’s story is the question, Chloe’s story is the answer to why so many of these endearing characters acted the way they did. And Linda was such a dynamite character who barrelled into Tina’s life when she got to college, I couldn’t wait to find out what made her so sassy! And Helen did for Chloe what Linda did for Tina.
Tina's Torment Would you tell your best friend?
High school is a slog as Tina turns from a frumpy swot into a svelte high-achiever, but there are rewards as a blast from the past reappears with a secret and a mission - to teach her how to sail.
However, being a disco diva attracts the wrong attention and she learns hard lessons about "handsome is as handsome does."
Years down the line, on her ex-best friend’s hen night, Tina is faced with a choice – does she tell Chloe what a rat her fiancĂ© is and ruin what should be the happiest day of her life?
Or does she stay schtum and let him ruin the rest of Chloe’s life?
Chloe's Chaos
Disappointment, Despair, Betrayal as Chloe’s checkered past comes back to bite her.
Chloe navigates a dating minefield, leaving behind a trail of guys who she'd (unwittingly) turned into monsters.
But she learns something from every one - mostly about what she doesn't want in a partner. And how looks can be deceptive - being the spitting image of Stevie Nicks isn't always an advantage.
Her Goldilocks list fills up with unsuitable suitors, but quite where the pseudo-autistic skater-guy, gentle-giant hairy biker and psychotic millionaire-stalker appeared from is a mystery.
Linda's Lament
Almost Famous meets 10 Things I Hate About You with elements of Queen's Gambit.
Touring with a chart-topping rock band isn't all it's cracked up to be when you're only 11 and confused by so much grown-up stuff. But experimenting with someone her own age brings disastrous consequences - and a spell in a holy prison.
Breaking free, Lin's love of music and Shakespeare finally pays off as she shares the stage with the only person who never made her feel fat, ugly or a nuisance. But somehow, the guys she fances are all unavailable. Until Richie.
Helen's Hazard
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
Helen must’ve done something really bad in a former life to end up with a sneaky sister dobbing her in to their deranged dad who delights in administering his twisted punishment ritual. Her mousey mum's too busy dodging punches to notice, and couldn’t do anything if she did.
Handsome princes are decidedly thin on the ground in her small English hometown, and inevitably turn into frogs when she kisses them.
She never expected her first true love to be a Greek island, but she loses her heart to their way of life. The first Greek man she encounters reeks of pride and arrogance. And she’s had way more than her fill of that. A moonlit kiss gives her hope — but what’s the secret her sister won’t share, and will it destroy everything?
A modern Cinderella story with a flavour of Shirly Valentine and Mamma Mia
